Disasters can be overwhelming and upsetting. But they only grow worse the longer you wait to act. This particularly true for tropical locations like Hawaii where high-humidity increases the threat of mold and mildew. Consider these facts:

  • Stopping water damage within 24-48 hours is the best way to minimize damages.
  • Unchecked moisture creates mold and mildew, potentially ruining carpets, furniture, fabrics, and even the structural components of your home.
  • Mold can cause illnesses and poses health risks.
  • Sewage and polluted water also poses health risks.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

In the event of a flood, should I call my insurance company first?
While a complex question, the short and easy answer is no. Your insurance company actually prefers that you contact a restoration company to begin water cleanup and repair any damage done as soon as possible. We recommend turning off any water valves you can access, if possible, and call a plumber to fix any initial leaks. However, the faster our team arrives, the sooner we’ll be able to prevent any more damage and destruction from occurring on your property. You will still want to call your insurance company, but do not wait for them before contacting a restoration company to start any clean up and repairs that may need to be done. If you do plan on filing a claim, they will need an assessment of the damage and an estimation of the cost of restoration either way, and calling will speed up that process and get you back up on your feet much faster.
How do I know if my property has water damage?

One of the scariest facets of water damage is that it isn’t always readily visible. In fact, a lot of damage is actually hidden. Here are some ways you can recognize hidden water damage to your property such as:

  • Peeling paint and wallpaper
  • Visible mold
  • Moisture and/or condensation
  • Musty odors
  • Increase in insect or pest activity

Moreover, moisture or dampness in your flooring or carpet may indicate water damage as more often than not, people may have water in crawl spaces that they are unaware of.

What happens after the water is gone and the property is dry?
After any damage done is alleviated, further repairs may be needed. HBM Restoration is a full-service, general contractor that can not only assess and mitigate any damage done to the property, but also make any necessary repairs.
Why would I need water damage restoration?
Essentially, water damage restoration is the process, usually carried out by professionals or trained workers certified in restoration, of removing unsafe and undesired levels of water. Water damage restoration also encompasses processes after the removal of water such as drying and cleaning the property and its contents, and returning it to its pre-loss condition.
Is it dangerous if I don’t use a certified restoration company to clean up water damage?
To keep it simple, yes, water damage is dangerous not only to the persons operating within the property that water damage is present, but also to the property itself. Any flowing water from untreated sources can contaminate any surfaces that it comes into contact with. Additionally, water damage has the potential to create electrical hazards that pose serious threats to a person’s wellbeing. Therefore, we advise not to enter any area where water damage is present until it is deemed safe.
Does it take long to recover from water damage?
The process of water damage restoration varies depending on a number of factors including the severity of the damage done and the type of structure and its materials that have been damaged. Additionally, any contents that have been affected within the property, such as structural abnormalities and the presence of hazardous materials, impact the time needed to properly and safely restore your property to pre-loss conditions. HBM Restoration will be able to provide a more accurate time frame along with cost estimations after we assess the property.
Will my insurance cover water damage done to my property?
Unfortunately, we cannot say with certainty whether or not your insurance does help with water damage, however, many homeowner insurance policies do offer coverage with water damage to some degree. HBM Restoration recommends you contact your insurance agent to have a conversation about the specific details of your policy. Please note as well that flooding related to abnormal weather events requires some form of special insurance that is provided through the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Plan).
