What is Mold?
Mold, sometimes referred to as mildew, is a living microorganism that grows in moist environments. When mold infests an environment, if left untreated, it will multiply and eventually damage structural elements of a building. Physical exposure to mold can lead to allergic reactions, respiratory problems, or other illnesses. For children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems, exposure can be deadly. Additionally, there are many types of mold species, both indoor and outdoor varieties, each one presenting their own set of issues.
How Does Mold Become a Problem?
Mold can begin to grow on moist surfaces within 24 hours. It can grow in places where moisture is regularly present, such as a bathroom, or in places affected by water damage, such from a roof leak or flood. Mold can grow on wood, sheetrock, grout or any other material. Further, mold propagates by releasing microscopic spores which quickly contaminate adjacent areas. So if your property has experienced any kind of water damage, it’s vital to immediately address the threat of mold.
What are the Signs of Mold?

Wondering whether you might have a mold problem? Look for these signs:

  • Musty Odors: A persistent musty odor is often the first sign of mold.
  • Discoloration: Dark spots on walls or ceilings, or discoloration on tile grout.
  • Water Damage: Signs of unwanted moisture such as wet material, water spots, leaks, rust, warped wood, structural deteriorations, and bubbling or peeling paint.
  • Allergic Reactions: Exposure to mold can cause allergic reactions, such as asthma, sore eyes, itchy skin, nasal congestion, sneezing, coughing and sore throat. If you feel better when you leave the property and worse when you return, check for mold.
